Running Accomplishments:

I have just recently started running.  I ran my first race on April 29, 2017  It was a 5K race in Singapore.  My time was 18:37.4.  I hope to continue running for enjoyment for a long time, and run in races occasionally.

Since my first race I have lowered my 5K time to 17:47.58 (June 30, 2017, Singapore)

I have also run 61 sec for  400m, and 2:13 for 800m.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to increase my training and become faster.  I would eventually like to become the fastest in my age group.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would love to continue running as long as I can.

Personal:

I am Vietnamese-American and I am 15 years old.  I am home schooled so do not run on a team. 

I started running in the Fall of 2016 when my mom and I were living in Salt Lake City.

 I love running everyday.

My favorite subjects are History and Math.

I would love to be a history teacher or math teacher someday.

I did another workout today that I borrowed from Brandon.  It was 8 x 300m.  He did 10 x 300m, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do 10 so I did 8 instead.  Afterwards, I wished I would have done 10.  I think I could have handled it.  Also I was taking a 2 minute rest and jog in between.  Maybe that is too long.  I don't know how long the rest should be.

It was so cold out this morning.  I didn't want to run fast in the cold, but I had a goal to run 3 miles fast this morning.

I ran 3 miles in 18:25.  That is a new PR for that distance for me.

I then ran until I reached 10 miles at a pace of 8:00 minutes/mile.

It was really cold this morning.  My nose and face got so cold while I was running.  I ran 10 miles at 7:40/mile pace.

I guess, I will only be here in Salt Lake City for a couple more weeks.  My mother called my father in Hawaii to see if I could spend some time with him, but I could tell from their conversation that he didn't want me for the summer.  My grandparents are going on a long vacation in Europe at the beginning of summer, so I can't stay with them.  But my Uncle who is working in Singapore invited me there for the first part of the summer, so I guess I will be staying with my aunt and uncle and cousins in Singapore.  It sounds kind of exciting, but I am a little nervous.  I don't know if after the summer I will be coming back to Utah or not.  Most likely, not.  We will probably be relocating to San Francisco for my mom's work.  I have loved it here in Utah.  I have felt more at home here than anywhere else I have lived so far.

I had a hard workout planned for this morning, but I was not feeling very energetic, so I decided to have another recovery day today.  I've read that it is best to be 100% when doing hard workouts, so I will wait till tomorrow.

Today I ran 10 miles at 8:00/mile pace.   It was so cold again this morning.  The last couple of days I have had a hard time warming my hands up after my runs.  They turn white and I lose feeling in them.  I have to soak them in warm water to warm them up.  I wear ski gloves when I run, but still they get so cold.

Today mom and I are having lunch with an older lady in the neighborhood.  She is 96 years old.  She is one of my favorite people.  She has so many stories of growing up in the back hills of Arkansas.

Did a hard workout today.

I ran 4 x 800m .  My goal was to do them in 2:40, but I was ale to surpass that.  I was happy about that.   After the third 800m I didn't think I would be able to reach my goal on the last one, but from somewhere I found enough energy and the fourth 800m ended up being my fastest.

Ran an easy 10 miles this morning at 8:00/mile pace.  It was nice and warm this morning.  It felt nice.

We are having trouble with our waterheater today.  I had to take a cold shower after my run.  I have been cold ever since.

I was late doing my run this morning.  I waited for the rain to stop (somewhat stop).  I did an easy 10 miles.

As I have been reading the blogs here, I have been so excited to read about everyone's races.  Everyone seems to be having such a fun time running together and cheering each other on.

Seems like I was eating all weekend.  Had a couple of going away parties.  I had so much ice cream and brownies last night that I decided just to do an easy run this morning.

Ran the first 5 miles at 7:00/mile pace, then the last 5 miles with my mom at about 8:00/mile pace.  Felt nice and easy today.  I feel that I am getting much stronger.

It was another cold morning.

Today was a great day!!

I ran a PR for 3 miles.  I knew today was the last day for me to run this course for time and I wanted to run a new PR.  I took off hard and ran as hard as I could, it hurt.  It REALLY hurt, but I got caught up in the emotion knowing I would never run this course again and it has been my favorite course.  I fought through the pain and with tears streaming down my face I kept running as hard as I could.  I finished in 18:02 which not only bettered my PR but beat it by a lot.  I was so happy.

I then ran with my mom to complete 10 miles.  We ran at about 9:00/mile pace.

Did a very, very easy 10 miles today.  Yesterday's run took more out of me than I expected.  Looks like it is going to be a very nice day today.

No running today.

My mother and I have been running up City Creek Canyon a lot this last winter, and every time we do we say that when it becomes spring we will have a picnic there.

Well, since I only have a couple more days left in Utah, we decided to have a picnic today.  We go up early and took a picnic lunch and hiked to the top of the canyon.

It was such a nice day.  I am going to miss City Creek Canyon.

There are still so many things that I wanted to do in Utah.  I wanted to hike in the wasatch mountains and see the wild flowers.  I wanted to go to southern Utah to see the national parks.  I hope I can come back here someday.

It is hard to believe that today was my last run here in Salt Lake City.

It still hasn't really sunk into me that I won't be coming back here.  I am really going to miss it here.

Well, I have arrived in Singapore.  It is really hot here!  I mean really hot and humid.

I haven't been able to run yet.  There is no where good near the apartment complex where I am to run.  I do have access to a treadmill though at the fitness center at the complex.  I hate running on the treadmill, but I might have to.

I spent the day yesterday doing a lot of sightseeing things and did a lot of walking.  Probably will be doing the same today.

Today I finally was able to run, however, it was on the treadmill.

I went to the fitness room in the morning to run, and the attendant asked me how old I was.  When I told him I was 15, he said anyone under 16 had to have an adult with them.  I had to go back home, and later in the day I came back with my aunt.  She never said anything, but I could tell that she wasn't too happy about having to come.

I started running on the treadmill, and it seemed so slow.  I started at 8 min/mile and it felt like I could walk that fast, so I sped it up to 7 min/mile, 6 min/mile, 5 min/mile then finally 4 min/mile.  It was getting fast but I knew I can't be running 4 min/mile, so I went and told the attendant that the treadmill seemed to be broken.  He came and looked at it and asked what was wrong.  I told him that it was moving too slow.  I told him I don't think I can run 4 min/mile, but on this treadmill I can.  He just looked angry at me and said it was not broken.  The treadmill is in km not miles.   I was really embarrased.  That was the second time I had problems with him today and I am sure he doesn't like me.

I then ran 6 miles (10 km) on the treadmill.  I wanted to do more, but my aunt was waiting and I was getting dizzy.  I don't like running on the treadmill.

I miss 11th Ave in Salt Lake.   :(

Had another run in with the fitness room attendant.  I am going to call him "Mr. Grouchy" because he always seems angry and never smiles at me.

I did some weight lifting today.  It is the first time for me so I didn't know anything about how to do it.  There was a bench press and some barbells, so I started lifting them.  Mr. Grouchy comes over and yells at me "Can't you read?  There is a sign saying you can't lift the barbells with out have another person to watch. "  He really hates me now.   My aunt was there, but was doing some lifting on the weight machines.  Oh well.  I did some leg presses on the weight machine, and used some other machines.

Ran another 6 miles on the treadmill.  It is really kind of boring running on the treadmill, and I feel that I am losing some conditioning by not running on the road.

It is strange being one day ahead here.  It is saturday here, and most of the people on the blog are still on Friday.

Did 6 miles (10K) on the treadmill.  Today I ran 2 minutes fast, and then ran 2 minutes slower for recovery.  I kept repeating that.  It is amazing how long 2 minutes is when you are running fast on the treadmill.  It seems that when I run on the road 2 minutes goes by quickly.

My uncle got persmission for me to attend school here while I am in Singapore.  I will start tomorrow.  It will be my first time in my life to attend a school.  I have been home taught my entire life.I am excited, but also scared.  At this school they wear uniforms, so I will borrow my cousins uniform.  She is two years older than me so is in a different class.

I didn't know if I was even going to be able to run today.  I went to school for the first time ever.  I was so tired when I got home.  I didn't want to do anything.  I took a short nap and then felt a little more like running.

I did 6 miles on the treadmill.

I wonder if all of the other students on the blog here are that tired everyday after school.  If you are I really admire you even more for being able to do school and train everyday.

I am too tired tonight.  I will write what I think about school another day.

Today I ran 6 miles on the treadmill before going to school.  I have been so tired after school that I don't feel like doing anything.

No running today.  I am resting for tomorrow race so that I will be 100%.

I m really getting nervous about the race.  I have felt a lot of pressure, because a lot of people are counting on me to do well.  I almost wish I hadn't signed up for the race.

Last night, my uncle took us all to a "Steamboat Restaurant" for dinner.  He said I needed to eat a lot for my race on Saturday.  It was deliciousl .  It was a buffet restaurant.  The steemboat is a pot with broth inside.  You can put the broth that you want in your pot, and around the pot is like a place like a mongolia barbeque where you can barbeque.  You get all the vegetables that you want and different kinds of meats that you want and either cook them in the broth or barbeque them.   It was great!  The best part was that they had "BEETS".  My favorite vegetable is beets.  I usually have beets every day either cooked or pickled, but I haven' had any in Singapore.  Last night there were beets, so I ate lots of them.  I have read that beets are a "super food" for endurance, and that your endurance will greatly improve if you eat beets. 

Time to go to school.

Pre-race:  I didn't sleep well last night.  I guess I was so anxious for the race.  The starting time for the race was 9:00am, so I got up at 6:00am.  My aunt made us a breakfast of French toast, which was delicious.  The race was a small 5K race for the residents of the large apartment complex here where I am staying, so the start of the race was near the apartment.  Physically I felt very well rested and relaxed.  I felt I was at 100%.  I arrived at the starting area nice and early, got my racing number, etc. and was warming up.  It was then that I noticed that "Mr. Grouchy" from the fitness center was there and seemed to be in charge.  The fitness center was the one operating the race, so I guess it makes sense that he would be there.  I started getting really nervous, and suddenly I felt like I needed to go to the restroom.  I asked "Mr. Grouchy" if I had time to go.  He looked at me with his upset look, and said, "If you are going to go, you had better hurry and do it now.  We aren't going to wait for you!"  For some reason he really hates me.  I found a restroom and luckily arrived back in time for the start.

 

Start:  There were not many people in the race.  I think there were only about 30 people and only 5 or 6 women.  I think I was probably the youngest in the race.  It was probably a good thing that there were only a few people in the race, because the starting area was not very large.  If there had been more people, it would have really been crowded at the start.  We all line up for the start of the race.  I was in the second row of people from the front.  "Mr. Grouchy" was the one who started the race.  When he shot the gun, it startled me and everyone around me took off running so fast.  I was not prepared for that and for some reason kind of panicked and was dazed and just stood there without moving.  I then heard my uncle on the sideline yell "Run Eva!"  I started running, and gradually started passing people and working my way toward the front.  After a short time I finally passed the last person and was in the front. 

 

Race:  During the race I felt good.  My goal was to set a new personal best.  I thought that this was a good chance to do that, because I didn't have to wear my winter running clothes like I did in Salt Lake, and I was also at sea level.  The race was about 2 laps around the apartment complex.  There were lots of people cheering on the sides.  I remember hearing one person later in the race yell out, "They are gaining on you!"  That sent a little fear in me.  I didn't look back, but I tried to give it a little more so that I wouldn't get passed.  Throughout the race, my breathing was good, but on the second lap, I could feel my legs were getting heavy.  When I ran in Salt Lake, I would always start breathing heavy before my legs gave out, but here my legs were giving out first.  Maybe it was because of the altitude.  Finally, I could see the finish line in front of me, so I gave it all I had with a sprint to the finish.  I crossed the finish in 18:37.4.  When I saw the time I was really disappointed.  I was hoping to go under 18 minutes to get a personal best for 3 miles.  It wasn't until later that I realized 5K is a little longer than 3 miles, so maybe it was a personal best for me.  It was my first 5K, so it was a PB for that.  Also, I was informed that I beat the race record.  I was happy about that.  The 2nd place runner was about 1 minute behind me.  When I crossed the finish line, I saw "Mr. Grouchy".  He gave me a nod and even what looked like a small smile (maybe I just imagined the smile).   Getting any kind of acknowledgement from him was worth running the race.

 

Post race:  After the race many people came up and congratulated me.  One person asked me where I learned to run so fast.  The first thing that came to mind was everyone from the Blog who always give me encouragement.  I told the person it was because of great friends that share their running experiences with me and give me advice and encouragement to keep running.

I want to give a special shout out and hug for Brandon from blog.  He let me borrow his workouts all spring, and it was when I started doing those workouts that my times really started to come down.  He also gave me some great advice for my first race.  Brandon, if you are reading this, you are the greatest!  I did what you said and I gave it my all.  I have no regrets, except for one.  Next time I run a race, I will start running as soon as the gun goes off.  :)

I ended up with big blisters on my feet.  When I took my shoes off, I noticed my socks were all bloody from the popped blisters that were bleeding.  I didn't notice any pain while I was running, but I can hardly step on my feet now because of the pain.  I think it must have been the heat and the hot road that caused me to get blisters.

 

Thoughts on racing:  Now, after having run my first race, I have some thoughts on racing.  It was great running and feeling the adrenaline.  Feeling the thrill of crossing the finish line in first is something I won't forget.  But the nervousness before the race is something I did not like.  For me right now, I think I prefer just running for me and trying to better myself.  My mother always says running is for learning self-control and self-mastery and not for becoming competitive.  She encouraged me to run to learn how to set goals and learn what it means to work hard to achieve a goal.  She never wanted me to race.  I haven't told her yet that I ran a race here in Singapore.  I definitely will continue running, and do look forward to racing again someday, but more important for right now, I just want to enjoy running.

Feeling a lot of muscle soreness today, and the blisters on my feet are killing me.  I think I will just relax today.
