Running Accomplishments:

I have just recently started running.  I ran my first race on April 29, 2017  It was a 5K race in Singapore.  My time was 18:37.4.  I hope to continue running for enjoyment for a long time, and run in races occasionally.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to increase my training and become faster.  I would eventually like to become the fastest in my age group.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would love to continue running as long as I can.


I am Vietnamese-American and I am 15 years old.  I am home schooled so do not run on a team. 

 I enjoy running everyday, and you may find me running City Creek Canyon, Memory Grove or in the avenues near the cemetary in Salt Lake City almost everyday.

My favorite subjects are History and Math.

I would love to be a history teacher or math teacher someday.

I almost didn't run this morning because of my blisters, but I put lots of bandaids on and when to the fitness center and ran 6 miles on the treadmill.

I was very surprised today, because Mr. Grouchy was very kind to me.  I think it was because of the race.  He told my aunt that if I was interested in training with the college team, he was friends with the track coach there and would talk with him.  That sounds interesting but I would still have the problem of getting there.  I would have to take the subway or bus, and I don't have the money to do that often.  I could maybe do it once or twice a week though.

He also gave me a map of some running courses nearby the apartment complex.  I wish he would have given me them before.  I will have to try them.  I am a little nervous about running them alone though.  My mom would never let me do that.  

I also found out Mr. Gouchy's real name today.  It is Mr. Teo, so I guess I will stop calling him Mr. Grouchy.  He even said that I could come to the fitness center by myself if my aunt is not able to come with me.

Ran 6 miles on the treadmill.  I was going to run one of the running routes around the apartment complex that was on the map that Mr. Teo gave me yesterday, but it starting raining with lots of thunder and lightning, so I went back to the fitness center.   (One thing about Singapore, it rains here every day.  It does not rain constant, but I think there has been rain here everyday since I got here.  You always have to have an umbrella with you.)

My aunt was not with me today, but Mr. Teo said that it was okay if I used the treadmill.  Mr. Teo's attitude toward me has completely changed since the race.  He has really been friendly.  I guess I can't call him Mr. Grouchy anymore.

This morning I ran one of the courses around the apartment complex that was on Mr. Teo's running map.  I was kind of nervous about doing it, because I was by myself and it was all new to me.  It seemed like a nice course.  According to his map it is a 10K course.

I have found that running before going to school has been working out well for me.  After coming back from school I was always just too tired to get excited about running.

I have gradually gotten accustomed to school.  I like home schooling better though. It seems that I can use my time more efficiently by studying at home.  I think there is a lot of wasted time at school.

I have a nickname in my class at school.  They call me "Mormon".  The first day I introduced myself as coming from Salt Lake City, Utah.  And some of the students started calling me "Mormon".  I tried to tell them I am not a mormon and don't have a religion, but they still call me "Mormon" and now it seems everyone calls me mormon.  Oh well.  Most of the people I met in Salt Lake were nice people.  I don't really know who were and who weren't mormons there, but the ones that I do know who are mormons were good to me, so I guess I will take being called "Mormon" a compliment.

Most of the students in my class are here because their parents are working in Singapore.   There is one group, I think they must be the elite, wealthy group.  They don't associate with many of the other students.  There are also a few students who are from Singapore.  They are friendly, and they have accepted me in to their group, maybe because I am also Asian.

Anyway, I am enjoying school.  It has been a good experience so far.

I did 6 miles easy today.  The plan was do run and fast pace, but things did not work out for that.  It was sunny this morning so I decided to run outside on one of the running routes on my running map.  I started out okay, but it was so hot.  It was 90 degrees and 94% humidity.  The sun felt so hot and it was so humid.  I was drenched with sweat and so thirsty when I finished.  If I am going to run outside here, I am going to have to take a water bottle with me.  I might have to go back to running indoors on the treadmill even though I hate the treadmill.  At least it is air-conditioned inside.

I am not really sure how many miles I ran today.

I ran 3 miles this morning.

Then later in the after, I went to the university with my cousin.  Mr. Teo from the fitness center arranged for me to run with the team there.  He is friends with the coach there.

The coach wanted me to run a 400 m time trial with his team.

I was not expecting that.

He told me to go out the first 50m as fast as I could, then settle into a good fast pace to the 200m mark, then give it all I had, and for the last 100m to use my arms and finish the best that I could.

I did that, but when I hit the last 100m I felt like I was running in slow motion.  I used my arms like he said and finished in 61.1sec.

The coach said that I could train with his team, but told me I should get some track spikes or at least some racing shoes.  

I don't know if I want to get that serious yet.

Mr. Teo told me the other day about a track where I can run, so this morning I ran there to use the track.  The track is a short track (250m).  It was not as close as I thought it was going to be, but finally I found it.

I ran five 500m.  It was very humid and hot, and I didn't feel like I had a lot of energy today, so I ran them fast, but relaxed.  I ran 500m in between.

I thought I was running each 500m at the same pace, but for some reason each one was a little faster than the one before.

The other day someone asked me why I ran so fast.  I don't really know why I am able to run fast.  I was thinking about it today while I was running.  I think I owe a lot of what I am able to do though to my mother.

When I was very small, I had troubles standing on my own and walking.  I was very uncoordinated and had terrible balance.  The doctor told my mother my legs were unusually weak.  I am not sure if my mother came up with it on her own or if the doctor suggested it, but my mother had me march.  She would have me stand straight up and march in place, lifting my knees as high as I could while swinging my arms.  She would have me march and march and march.  As my legs got stronger she also had me do jumping.  She had me jump as high as I could and then land in a deep squat and jump again and again and again.   Well, ever since then I continued doing that every day.  Even now I march in front of the TV while watching TV, and I do 100 jumping squats everyday.  I have done it most of my life, and it has made my legs strong. 

When we moved to Salt Lake at the later part of last year, I would see people running on 11th Ave.  I told my mom then that I wanted to start running.  We went to "Big 5" in Salt Lake and got some shoes (Ascic Gel) and things and we started running.  I think the avenues in Salt Lake are the Mecca for running.

While searching some things about running on the Internet I found the Fast Running Blog and started this blog.  

I just love running and hope to continue doing it for a long time.  It is fun winning races, but it is even funner for me to push myself and watch my improvement.

Ran after school today because I wanted to do a long run.  It was a mistake though.  It was so hot and humid.  I took a bottle of water with me, but still I got close to becoming dehydrated.  I don't think I will do that again.

I was still feeling a little weak from yesterdays run this morning, and it looked like it was going to rain, so I went to the fitness center and ran on the treadmill.  Mr. Teo even looked happy to see me.  Maybe it was because I gave him some chocolates that I bought for him.  For someone who seemed to hate me when I first arrived here, Mr. Teo has become one of my best friends here in Singapore.

I was going to run 6 miles on the treadmill, but I only had energy for 3 miles.  I am still a little light headed from yesterday.

My uncle is taking us all to Bintan Island in Indonesia for the weekend.  It is a short boat ride from Singapore.  I am looking forward to that.

I don't have  swimsuit, so I am going shopping with my cousin this afternoon for one.  My cousin is so boy crazy that we will probably do more talking to the guys at the mall than shopping though.  Oh well.

I had a great weekend in Bintan Island.  It was so beautiful there.

I didnt do any running, but I did some snorlkelling in the ocean.  It was my first time to snorkel.  It was so beautiful.

Today I ran 6 miles on the treadmill.  I felt good to run again.

Today is mother's day in the USA.  I will talk to my mother a little later.  I really miss her.  I heard from her the other day, and she said that she has a surprise for me and will talk to me about it later, so maybe she will tell me today.

I am hoping she is going to say that we can stay in Salt Lake.  I hope, hope, hope, hope.

Yesterday, my mom told me she had a surprise for me.  I was hoping it was that we would be staying in Utah.....but no.  Her suprise was more of a SHOCK to me than a surprise.  She told me she is getting remarried.   I was in shock when I heard that.  I thought how could she meet someone that soon.  Anyway, she met an architect from Seattle and he asked her to marry him and she said yes.  I don't know what to think.  She told me that he has a large house on some island near seattle.  She said that there is a guest house next to the house and that Jon (his name is Jon) said that if I wanted I could have the whole guest house for myself.  The first thing I thought was that he thinks of me as the pet daughter that he can put outside in the dog house to get me out of the way.  I am really feeling kind of depressed today.  I have a father who is not interested in me, now this.  

I wasn't feeling like running today, but I went to the fitness center anyway.  Mr. Teo could tell that something was wrong.  I told him what happened.  He talked with me about it for a while.  He told me to try and think about it from my mom's point of view.  In a few years I will meet someone and want to get married and will move out leaving my mother to live alone.  She probably also wants to have someone that will be there when I am no longer there.  Maybe I am being selfish not wanting my mother to remarry, but I just can't help not liking the idea.  I didnt sleep at all last night.  I just dont feel like doing much of anything right now.  I ended up not running and just talking with Mr. Teo this morning.

It is a hot and sunny morning here in Singapore today.  It felt good to run this morning and I took it out fast today.  Did the 6 miles in about 41 minutes.

This morning I ran 3 miles easy.

This afternoon I trained with the college.

I asked the coach if he would time me in a 800m time trial.  He had some of the guys pace me.

I ran 2:13.7.  I cam around the first 400m in 64.  I felt not too bad, but starting into the final 200m, my shoulders and neck got really tight, everything started getting dark..I thought I would pass out, but I kept pushing to the end.

After, we ran 2 x 400m (65 sec) and 8 x 200 m (31 to 36 sec) .  I was so dead on the last couple of 200m that all I could do was 36 sec.

I read a blog today here on the "fast running blog".  It was a blog about a father and son who ran a half marathon in Crocs.   I couldn't believe it.  Today the coach at the college told me again that I need to get some racing flats or spikes.  He says it would make a big difference.  So I told him about the guys running in Crocs.  I joked and told him I was going to get some Crocs to run in.

On the way home I actually even went and tried some on.  I can't see how anyone can run in Crocs.

Ran 6 easy miles in the rain.  I have kind of gotten used to the rain here.  It rains every day, but it doesn't last for long, just off and on all day long.  

I was so sore today from yesterday.  I haven't been this sore in a long time.

I have set some new running goals for the summer.  I am posting them and my running schedule for June below.  That way I am committed to doing it.
